Question. If you had a chance to get a job that offered about $8000 more a year then your current job and offered benifits such as medical, dental, vision, and 401k, would you go for it?
Background information. Let me start off saying that I'm a very loyal person. I don't just up and quit anything. I've been a member of two churches my whole life and the only reason for the second one was because my first church is now 4 hours away and that's a bit much to commute. I have never just up and quit a job on the spur of the moment. I even stick with the same kind of icecream for years and years. For me to even be considering another job while I currently have one is difficult for me. My current job is a good job with people that I mostly like. However, they do not offer ANY form of health insurance to woman (which I am, obviously). They don't have any retirement options such as a 401k. I was told a year ago that I wasn't eligible for a raise because I hadn't been there long enough-less then a year- and told this year because of recent additions to staff and the cost of all the raises given last year I probably will not be getting a raise this year-maybe next year a cost of living increase---MAYBE. Gosh, this job sounds like the pits. It's not really. My current job is very laid back, if I'm sick no problem, if my kid's sick no problem, if I'm occasionally late, no problem, if I want to come in on the weekends to finish something up, no problem. When I need to leave at 3:00 on Wednesdays no problem as long as the work is done. This job allows my child to attend the preschool program for free, they take her to kindergarten at the public school and pay for the afterschool care which picks her up from kindergarten. These are my ONLY benifits. These benifits amount to about $4000 a year. We're not strapped for money, but I haven't had health insurance for me or Peanut for about two years. Thank GOD, He has blessed us to be pretty healthy these last two years and when I needed to go to the doctor I just paid for the visits and the medicine. I'm not trying to make you feel sorry for me... I'm just pretty much thinking out loud trying to decide what I want to do. I have until the end of the week to submit a resume if I want to go for the job.

You and I have very similar jobs. We both work for churches and they both are very laid back. I have thought many times about changing jobs. One thing or another would come up and I would just think about how much more $$ I could make someplace else.
When I weigh it out, though, I really have a good job for me. I worked at a place before that you couldn't just go to the bathroom if you needed to. Here, I can not only go to the bathroom, I can go to the store, I can go HOME if want to. Little things like flexibility are important to me.
I only work parttime but the pay isn't too bad. I've worked my way up to where I am. Each year I get more responsibility and usually am compensated accordingly.
I don't have insurance but my husband has it for the family. We both have retirement accounts.
Seems like every time I start looking for something fulltime, I get a promotion or something wonderful happens. I take that to mean I'm suppose to stay right here for now.
I feel like I've written a book but just pray about it and weigh things out. Happy Decision Making!!
Cindy, I think it's great that God has protected you and placed you where you are comfortable. I know that God gave me this job because I needed the laid back-understanding kind of job. But I do payroll, which isn't all it's cracked up to be. The new girl they just hired is going to make $10,000 a year MORE then me and they say they can't give me even a cost of living raise because of this addition to staff? If they can't take care of thier new employees because they're too busy hiring new ones what does that say? Thank you for your response.

I think you're right to be looking for greener pastures, Leslee. Hiring someone new at $10K more is just unethical. I'll bet you could find a better situation, somewhere or other. And if you get a good offer, you could take it to your present employer and ask them to match or exceed it, and see what they have to say.
I'm with madcapmum on this one. I think the scariest thing is no health coverage. It can KILL a family finacially if something goes wrong.
If you can find a job that gives you flexible hours AND healthcare, take it. RUN. But you can always ask them to match in and see if they'll keep ya. My experience is sometimes they will and sometimes they won't...but if they do, then you have to ask yourself - why wasn't I worth this in the first place?
